They are among my favorite books of all, so I'm ever interested in a "new" book by Alexandre Dumas. "The Black Tulip" was one of those books of his I'd not read, nor even heard of until recently. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Loni Gee -- Jealousy Knows No Bounds in this Book : Alexander Dumas takes on a totally unique subject as he writes about the creation of the black tulip. If you love flowers, you will want to read this book as Dumas describes some of the processes the hero uses to create a unique colored tulip. It is really a love story; love of the tulip and love between two people who seem unlikely to ever be able to get together. But, it is overwhelmingly a tale of incredible jealousy and to what extent one man will go to, to prevent his rival from winning the award for the black tulip. It's a fast read, and it's okay. It's not my favorite book, but it's a unique look at growing tulips in Holland. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2014 )

• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Risa Schiff -- Enjoyable novel. Maybe buy a different copy. : Bought this book for husband. It arrived early and in great shape. He is thoroughly enjoying the book bc he is a Dumas fan (hence the 5 stars). • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Didier -- Love, adventure and tulip bulbs : Alexandre Dumas is probably best known for  The Three Musketeers (Wordsworth Classics) , The Man in the Iron Mask (Wordsworth Classics)  and  The Count of Monte Cristo (Wordsworth Classics)  but for some reason or other - perhaps because those novels are all fairly large and I know the stories from several film versions - I decided that 'The Black Tulip' would be my first ever novel by Dumas. The story is fairly simple and straightforward: the brothers John and Cornelius De Witte, political opponents of William of Orange (the future husband of James I's daughter Mary and king of England) are brutally murdered by a mob. Their relative Cornelius Van Baerle is soon afterwards also wrongfully accused of treason and jailed, which makes it impossible for him to tend to the black tulip he is passionately trying to grow. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Sally Hughes -- Dull Period Piece : To be honest I was expecting something more swashbuckling and adventurous from the man behind the Musketeers and I found this competantly written but dull. The opening re Cornelius and Johann de Witt set the story up well but after that it descended into petty bad neighbours among the tulip growers. Cornelius van Baerle, the novel's hero, is wet, things happen to him and he makes absolutely no effort to improve his own lot, just resigns himself to the inevitable which is then fixed by a series of rather ponderous deus ex machinas. I felt rather sorry for Rosa comdemned to life as second fiddle to a flower ... The detail of life in the Netherlands at the time was good but much more could have been made of the fascinating political and religious upheavals of the time. I bought it for my Kindle on holiday ... : First read as a child during homework time at boarding school I decided to return to it as an adult and was not disappointed. I bought it for my Kindle on holiday in Amsterdam to visit the tulip fields so it was extra appropriate! It is a classic but readable and a good introduction to such books for younger people.
