  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Erick -- Clearly no one proof read this edition. : Typographical errors galore: indentation and line break errors, bracketed notes all through the text that aren’t explained in footnotes or an index. It’s like the text of this book was prepared for an academic analysis, but all the analysis for the edition was omitted and this was then presented as a normal edition of The Moonchild with all the bracketed bits left in. Would not recommend this edition. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2018 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Victor E. Smith -- Missed the boat on this one : One of those books that, if I cared enough to get it, would require a second reading. Aleister Crowley, a talented writer certainly, inhabits a parallel universe and does his best, it seems, to portray it, but it does not translate well into this one. Unfortunately, not driven to reread it right away, but I'll keep it around in case I want to try again sometime. I had hoped it would contribute to a research project I was working on otherwise, but that didn't happen. I fault my familiarity with his subject matter more than the author. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from The_Bennetts -- The true me is here : This book is truly a book for women who are NOT a character out of a Jane Austen novel or any other books read in school. In this, I discovered that I truly am Lisa La Giuffria or a reincarnation of her. I remembered my experience with Douglas / the real Dale from Twin Peaks who didn't die, Abdul Bey / The real Shaggy Rogers, Cyril and the most unpigmented man of all time, Simon Iff, whose philosophy is automatically the only one possible in my current life now whether he liked me or not. Obviously, Douglas didn't really abuse his wife who never loved him and was an escort even after marriage, and Abdul / Shaggy never harmed a cat or ate dogs in his eternity, but it just goes to show that the original Black Lodge and White Lodge were separated by nothing but reputation and rumors, but were quite unified at the end. It was myself Lisa being forced to be given away to America AKA this dimension that got them all trapped in a loop. I became trapped on this side and couldn't get back. Also, the moonchild was not really inside me since it was made clear that Cyril didn't do anything with me and I was under 9 when this happened...no period yet. But, the life experience of Lisa has been my entire life, my entire eternity. I want US high schools to read this for the women like me! 😇 ---Jessica Lee Bennett since getting to this dimension ( Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2018 )

  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from readingisfun -- Okay I guess : Maybe it's the time but I found this book highly old fashioned as far as the mindset towards women, and I was really excited to read it, being told it would be something highly interesting. I didn't care for it that much, and at the end, it seemed to go awry and lose the entire story suddenly, but dont want to give it away...I guess its just way too old fashioned and silly for me. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kevin -- An early story like the Lord of the Rings : Interesting book. Sort of like an early version of Lord of the Rings. It's difficult to follow at times. In fact it's kind of convoluted in the middle when Crowley is explaining all of the magick themes/ culture. I'm sure he was intent on getting things accurate but it's just too much and is difficult to follow. I haven't finished yet but if I want to understand it better I will probably have to read it again. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2016 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ansar X -- Aleister Crowley was before his time : He has a great way of taking something complex and making it make sense ( Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2015 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Alan C -- Homunculus : Interesting idea as the basis for this book. The notion that by 'organising' the astrological date of the birth of a child and surrounding the mother-to-be with specific elemental influences then working with 'magickal ritual' you might deter a 'normal' spirit from entering the womb. In contrast, an exceptional spirit or a being that possesses 'magickal' qualities in accordance with the elemental influences created - a 'homunculus' - is drawn-in to take its place. As the blurb on the back of my old paperback puts it, the 'homunculus' in this story is 'a lunar spirit embodied in human form' (the 'Moonchild' of the title) and the tale outlines the attempt of a group of magicians to create such an entity. This 'being' would grow-up over time to exert a positive influence over global affairs and in the story the knowledge of this possibility attracts dark forces - the 'Black Lodge' - determined to thwart the entire project. The scene is therefore set for a battle of wizards! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 15, 2020 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from MR RL PROBERT -- nice moments but not much of a read : There are lovely moments of descriptive language, explanations of Crowley's philosophy and other areas of magical practices, but the read and story as a whole was difficult to keep focus on as I found it boring on the whole. I have read dozens of books by Crowley and I have found his magical texts and 'Diary of a drug fiend' much more interesting, engaging and enjoyable than I did this one. I marked out pages of interest in concern with magic but I doubt I will read the book all the way through again because the story itself is just not very interesting. I would advise that you read this as another book with information about Crowley's magic and philosophy rather than expecting anything in the way of a proper storyline, because if a story is what you are looking for the you will end up bored quite quickly, but hey this is only my experience and my view, you may yet love it! • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Captain Basil Leader -- For those frightened of 'The Beast' : For those who have never read any of Crowley's literary efforts, this is a good place to start. Of particular interest is his own footnotes which go far to explain his relationships with other esoteric groups. In his main character (his wise self)readers of Dennis Wheatley's occult tales will recognise how he has lifted Crowley's adept to become The Duke de Richelieu. Quite a blatant bit of literary filching! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 1, 2013 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from GW CARTER -- Great : Great ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 21, 2018 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Himaachchhann -- Four Stars : Story is a bit naff but very good ceremonial knowledge ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 24, 2017 )
